Another fave drum practice idea that really helps my playing grooves. Grooving Bass Drum Ostinatos (well at least trying) Ostinato=repetitive phrase Attempting to groove a 1/8 note hihat pattern and 2 + 4 on the snare to try to create a solid backbeat. The bass drum pattern changes every 4 bars - but the groove is more important. Make it more useful for your legs by playing on the ride and using 1/4 notes (or off beats) with foot hihat . Bassdrum Ostinatos 1/4 notes - Four on the Floor 1 + 3 - Backbeat 1 - Funk 2 + 4 - Ska 3 - One drop reggae 8th notes - Banging 8th note &s - the 'off beats' of 8ths 1 + 2& + 4 - Mambo or Baiao 1 + 2& - The Charleston 2& + 4 - Songo 2& - Bomba 4 x 16ths on 1 + 3 - 1/2a Blue Monday 1 + 1da + 2 + 2da + 3 + 3da + 4 + 4da - Samba 1 + 1e + 3 + 3e - 1/2 Afrobeat 1 + 2& + 3e - Funky groove PDF: www.humyo.com - Download the PDF here This example at 120 bpm which appears to be my current 16ths limit - I leave it out when trying higher speeds. Description :
Another fave drum practice idea that really helps me playing grooves. It's a fill - or a pattern - based around the 1 + 2& + 4 beats of an 8th note rhythm. Played simply with a single stroke roll - right left - sticking. There are accented notes on the 1 + 2& + 4 - this is also known as the Mambo or Baiao beat and is also happens to be the first bar of a 3:2 clave pattern. The 1 starts on the mid tom. The 2& on the high tom. The 4 on the floor tom. All the other notes are played softly on the snare. Practice it slowly at first then add your favourite bass drum beats. Only speed up when the groove feels good to you. I like the samba bass drum pattern and playing the accents on the 1 + 1da + 2& + 3 + 3da + 4& with a 16th note phrasing. Victor 61131 "Ave Maria" (Gounod) Mme. A. Michailowa with Violin Obligato (Soprano with Violin). Played on my VV-VIa with an Exhibition Sound-Box at approx. 75 rpm. It is a very worn copy with some very stressed grooves, but I thought it worthy of inclusion. I was unable to date this record precisely, as it is an import and has an odd catalogue number. However, it was issued sometime between 1904 and 1906. It was recorded in Europe by the Gramophone & Typewriter Ltd. for sale in North and South America only. Please note the old G & T angel trademark embossed on the back of the record, as part of the intro sequence. Addendum: Sept.14, '08 Upon further research I have come up with the following, Maria Michailowa was born Jun. 3, 1866 at Karkov, Russia and died Jan. 18, 1943 at Perm, Urals according to one source. "Maria Michailova (also sometimes shown as "Michailowa") was born Maria Van Puterin in Kharkov. She began her vocal studies at the St. Petersburg Conservatory and continued them abroad in Paris and Milan. Michailova made her debut at the Maryinsky Theater in 1892 and was a featured performer with that company for more than two decades. In the early years of the 1900s, she toured Russia extensively and performed in Japan in 1907. Michailova had a fear of traveling over water that limited her ability to appear outside continental Europe. At one point, Oscar Hammerstein was so taken with her voice that he attempted to engage Michailova for his Manhattan Opera Company ...
